Palmer was also quoted as saying: " The Power which made the body, heals the body." Which makes the Chiropractor a mediator of sorts for your health.
Chiropractic is a manual/physical medicine or therapy. The underlying intention is to increase the function of your nervous system via manipulation of the spine & other joints. In the beginning 1985, D.D.Palmer & his son B.J. Palmer the founding fathers of the modern chiropractor.
Posture is very important effecting your overall health! FHC or Forward Head Carriage
creates & amplifies stress on the upper thoracic spine/upper back. While not all people's response to chiropractic adjustments is the same, correction of this will avoid, pain, head aches, stress & early degeneration of the neck and upper back.
Your Vertebral Disc:
Your Disc does not have its own blood supply to speak of after the age of 11. The way it receives nutrition is by movement: flexion, extension, rotation & left/right lateral flexion. This movement causes a diffusion of nutrients in & out of the disc. But if you have sustained an injury, acute or chronic, the muscles put that part of the spine in what is called a "soft cast" as it heals. This limits the movement, therefore nutrition to the disc! And without Chiropractic Correction/Manipulation to restore full range of motion & break up scar tissue & adhesion to the disc (which maintains space & room for the exiting spinal nerve) The Disc Will Begin to Degenerate followed by the spinal nerve.
Disc injuries most commonly occur in either the neck/cervical spine or low back/lumbar spine. And must be diagnosed/verified with a MRI. While disc injuries can happen in the thoracic spine (where your ribs are), it is rare & not without significant trauma. There is no such thing as a "slipped disc". The center of the disc has the consistency of raw fish surrounded by layers of a very tough flexible rubber like fibrous cartilage. It is this center which is forced out thru the cartilage toward the rear where the spinal cord is OR lateral towards where the spinal nerve exits.
Examples of Cervical disc injuries: 1. At a stop sign, looking left, gets rear ended. 2. In a head lock doing martial arts training, gets neck twisted & forcibly bent.
Examples of Lumbar disc injuries: Requires you to be flexed forward (or backward) & Rotation or lateral bending of your lower torso. 1. Being broadsided in a vehicle. 2. Flipping a mattress & it overpowers you forcing you back & to the side. 3. After patching drywall, scrapping the floor, hit a nail not pounded down all the way, in a flexed, shoulders & hips are twisted/rotated.
Mild disc bulge-- I have used this safe & effective protocol for non-surgical disc bulges: either manual or assisted traction & after the MRI, chiropractic manipulation/adjustments Above & Below the documented disc level. this interrupts the pain/nerve/muscle spasm cycle.
Moderate disc bulge-- Computer controlled intermittent traction; 3x/week for 20 to 30 treatments. This will draw the center of the disc back home decreasing, minimizing or eliminating the radiating pain/numbness/paraesthesia.
Sequestrated Disc-- This is when a piece of the disc breaks of & migrates into the spinal canal. This is a surgical emergency & NOT a chiropractic condition.
